THE GEORGIA WATER USE / WATERSHED PROJECT

Data Description

Two types of data are presented in this site: the number of agricultural permits, and the amount of water (gpm) permitted for withdrawal by those permits. These data are allocated to a watershed using two different techniques, a land-area based allocation method and a GIS programming method.

The land-area based method assumes water permits and permitted withdrawals are evenly distributed across a county. As such, the percentage of a county that lies within a watershed corresponds to the proportion of the county’s permits and the proportion of its permitted withdrawals from that watershed. This method produces what are referred to as the "Land Area Based Estimates" for each county, watershed, and river basin.

The GIS programming method plots permit withdrawal sites using latitude and longitude information that accompany the permit. A watershed map of Georgia was overlaid on the permit map to identify which watershed each permit withdrawal site is actually located within. This method produces what are referred to as the "Actual" permits and permitted withdrawals for each county, watershed, and river basin.

The following information is available for every county in every watershed by clicking on the watershed map :

* Land Area Based Estimates of
- number of groundwater permits
- number of surface water permits
- number of groundwater + surface water permits

- volume of permitted groundwater withdrawals
- volume of permitted surface water withdrawals
- volume of permitted groundwater + surface water withdrawals

* Actual (GIS based)
- number of groundwater permits
- number of surface water permits
- number of groundwater + surface water permits

- volume of permitted groundwater withdrawals
- volume of permitted surface water withdrawals
- volume of permitted groundwater + surface water withdrawals

* The difference between Land Area Based Estimates and the Actual
- number of groundwater permits
- number of surface water permits
- number of groundwater + surface water permits

- volume of permitted groundwater withdrawals
- volume of permitted surface water withdrawals
- volume of permitted groundwater + surface water withdrawals

* County Distribution of Number of Permits in the Watershed

* County Distribution of Volume of Permitted Withdrawals in the Watershed

This information is also available for all 14 of Georgia’s river basins.
