Located in central
Georgia, the Upper
Flint watershed encompasses segments of 18 Georgia
counties. The largest city positioned inside the Upper Flint
watershed is Griffin. Currently,
there are 48 groundwater permits issued for agricultural use in the watershed.
In aggregate, these permits allow groundwater to be pumped at a rate of 19,405
gallons per minute. Similarly, 128 surface water permits are dispersed
throughout the watershed. In total, these permits allow surface water to be
pumped at a rate of 92,434 gallons per minute. Together, agricultural groundwater and
surface water permits in the Upper Flint watershed authorize total freshwater
withdrawals at a rate of 111,839 gallons per minute. This figure ranks 22nd highest out of the 51 watersheds for which data was
