Located in southwest
Georgia, the Lower
Flint watershed encompasses segments of 10 Georgia
counties. Like the majority of southwest Georgia,
the counties making up the Lower Flint watershed have a
vast agricultural sector. The largest city positioned inside the Lower
Flint watershed is Albany.
Currently, there are 1,333 groundwater permits issued for agricultural use in
the Lower Flint watershed. In aggregate, these permits
allow groundwater to be pumped at a rate of 1,282,133 gallons per minute.
Similarly, 133 surface water permits are dispersed throughout the watershed. In
total, these permits allow surface water to be pumped at a rate of 122,460
gallons per minute. Together, agricultural groundwater and surface water permits in the Lower
Flint watershed authorize
total freshwater withdrawals at a rate of 1,404,593 gallons per minute. This
figure ranks 2nd highest out of the 51 watersheds for which data was
available at the time of this study. For information regarding the percentages for which this watershed’s
agricultural water permits are either over or under allocated, click here.
